Who is Dr. Heaps?
Dr. James Heaps is a gynecologist and oncologist who worked on the UCLA campus for nearly 30 years. He completed his internship and residency in obstetrics/gynecology, followed by a fellowship in gynecologic oncology at the UCLA School of Medicine. Dr. Heaps held medical privileges at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and served on the UCLA Medical School faculty. He was a consulting physician for UCLA Health from 1983 to 2018.
Heaps, 62, has been accused of sexually assaulting women who were treated by him for cancer. He held staff privileges at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center from 1983 to 2018 and worked at the Student Health Center from 1988 to 2010. Dr. Heaps has also been accused of sexually assaulting students. The school acknowledged that it received its first complaint against Heaps for inappropriate and medically unnecessary touching and comments back in 2014 soon after he was hired. However, UCLA waited four years to remove him from practice and move to fire him, triggering his decision to retire. The school also waited four years to report him to law enforcement and the state medical board.
